Avignon is renowned for its theatre festival, founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar, which draws the latest in contemporary performing arts creations each summer. The “Off” festival has sprung up in the wake of the Avignon festival and offers over 900 different companies who turn Avignon into an immense and joyful stage throughout the month of July. In February, “Les Hivernales” winter contemporary dance festival shines the light on every aspect of dance.
